I remember, a long time ago, I saw a concert with Stevie Ray Vaughn, before he was really famous. He played in a gymnasium in San Diego. I was about three yards from the stage, close enough to watch his fingers flying across the neck of his guitar with surprising speed and accuracy. It was perhaps the most profound musical experience I’ve ever encountered.

There is something magical about being able to play the guitar. Most people are aware, at least one some level, of the pure emotional energy that you can express through music, that you can’t possible express through words, or through any other art form. Expressing emotions through music touches some kind of deep human emotion.

The guitar is likely the most popular instrument that people would like to learn today. It is extremely versatile, and very portable. You can take it and play it almost anywhere. You don’t see a lot of guys on street corners playing the piano. Some people, though, are under the impression that playing the guitar is extremely difficult and hard to master. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Of course, there is basically two kinds of guitar playing. You can strum chords, or you can play individual notes. While within each different category, there are plenty of sub categories, these are the two most basic. Strumming chords is likely the easiest to learn for most people.

The great thing about learning chords is that today’s popular music, most of the stuff you hear on the radio, consists of only three or four chords. So once you learn these chords, you can play along with our favorite band, for the entire song. That’s a pretty good feeling to be able to do that.

If you’ve ever thought about playing guitar, now’s the time. Just pick up any simple acoustic guitar and get started. Once you learn a few chords, and can play along with your favorite band, you’ll know the powerful secret that comes with being able to play the guitar.
